Akzidenz Grotesk
Designed and issued by a committee at the Berthold Foundry in Berlin, Germany in 1898, Akzidenz Grotesk is considered to be a Realist Letter which has the basic shape of Neoclassical and Romantic letters but without any serifs. The new look of sans serif that fused Roman and display traditions with modern style was rooted in Akzidenz Grotesk and given new life with the Swiss Style movement. This typeface specimen booklet guides the reader through the history, usage, and influence of Akzidenz Grotesk on subsequent typeface development. This piece is also an exploration of roles type can play in a narrative. In this case, the body copy acts as the primary voice while type as image creates a secondary voice.
