Waterfire Providence
To create a unique and memorable piece for Barnaby Evan’s WaterFire Providence, I explored the interaction between water and fire. I built a soot collector and burned several fires in it using highly resinous wood. Afterwards, I collected the soot to create an ink. I then dripped the ink into a pan of water and captured the images by laying paper on the surface. By adding droplets of soapy water in strategic areas of the pan, I was able to manipulate the soot ink on the water’s surface to create lines. Using this technique with a commercially available soot ink, I was able to create a deeply scorched image. I used this image to represent the interaction of water and fire for my conventional accordion fold for WaterFire Providence.
